The Group 1 Moir Stakes produced a satisfying result for Vinery with the winner, Samaready, and Buffering, second completing the quinella.

Both are by Vinery based sires Samaready, by More Than Ready, currently the highest money earning sire in the southern hemisphere and Buffering by Mossman, a very much under rated stallion.

Samaready has returned to racing in brilliant fashion, if anything better that ever after a long layoff from injury.

She made a successful comeback to racing at Caulfield two weeks ago, her first start since August 2012 when running fourth in the Quezette Stakes, she suffered a strained hamstring on a track declared unsuitable.

Time and patience proved the best and only remedy, a lush paddock at Vinery Stud, if there was the slightest doubt about a complete recovery it would have meant retirement.

Her mission is now the $1 million Manikato Stakes on the eve of the Cox Plate, they can bring on the imports, she is the one they have to beat on what we saw on Friday evening.

She is the star of the Mick Price stable, and why wouldn’t she be? A dual Group 1 success and a winner now of six of her eight starts.

Buffering deserved to win the Moir Stakes, it would have been his first Group 1 success in a long string of wins, but there was no accounting for Samaready, she finished at the rate of gun fire and had the issue put away within a few strides.

Mossman, the sire of Buffering, has been a solid asset at Vinery; he has had to compete in the shadow of More Than Ready, which would be a hard act to follow for any sire in any era.

Now in his eighteenth year he was rewarded with another winner over the week end when Vintage Moss won at Eagle Farm, his progeny earnings now exceeds $26.5 million, he continues to keep the flag flying at Vinery.

Saturday was a big occasion day for Vinery Stud, and more so for Myboycharlie, siring his first Group winner with Charley Boy recording a brilliant win in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

The success could not have come at a more opportune time for Myboycharlie, going into his fourth breeding season at Vinery.

Seen as a brilliant horse, with a good turn of foot that saw him successful in the Group 1 Prix Morny France’s premier two year old race held at Deauville, a right handed track near Normanby.

Myboycharlie is a shuttle stallion, originally he stood for two seasons at the National Stud Newmarket, and the last two seasons in the northern hemisphere at Haras-Du Mezaray.

Charley Boy’s Flemington win, was followed up in France yesterday, when Salai scored a two and a half length win at Crayon.

The sire of Myboycharley, Dantime, formerly stood for three seasons at Bellbridge Park Stud in Western Australia.

Vinery’s evergreen sire, Testa Rossa, is one of those horses that seldom receive the recognition he is entitled to, he is more or less taken for granted.

Yet he has proved a great dual purpose horse, a success on the racetrack and at stud, with progeny earnings to his credit of $ 52.041 million.

Testa Rossa can boast a proud record against serious competition when Speediness won the Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington; it increased the total number of races won to 514 for the evergreen sire.

To date he has sired 46 Stakes horses, that includes 18 Group winners, and still going strong at 17 years of age.

Testa Rossa is by Perugino, he only had one start when winning at Leopardstown, he was clearly among the very best bred stallions to come into the southern hemisphere, being a three quarter brother by Danzig, to Sadler’s Well s and Fairy King, out of the family of Nureyev and Thatch.

More Than Ready completed a good day at the office when he sired the last winner on the program at Pakenham on Saturday, with Get Pronto scoring an easy win.

The welcoming mat is out and brushed awaiting the return of More Than Ready when he arrives back at Vinery for another stud season in the coming weeks.

And what a return! Another Group 1 winner, taking the tally to 13, via courtesy of Verrazano’s stunning victory in the $1million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, on the sea board of New Jersey.

In a field of seven runners he had the situation under control from the outset; he never looked like being challenged at any stage.

When the judge called a halt, the official margin was nine and a half lengths, some observers said had the breaks been released the margin would have been much greater.

Trainer, Todd Pletcher, has always believed in Verrazano, having prepared More Than Ready to six Black Type wins up to Group 1 level.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled by what he did in the Heskell, it was the most impressive performance by any three year old this year” said Pletcher.

Pletcher is not looking any further than the Group 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga in upstate New York, at the end of the month.

While most interest centred on Verrazano at present, Watabout’s success at Randwick, and Sugar Rush at Newcastle, each scored well, both are daughters of More Than Ready, a sire that has performed in both hemispheres.    

Big Brown is beating the drum on both sides of the Atlantic in the U S, and the sound has been heard in Ireland, with the impressive win of Darwin at The Curragh.

There is quite some topside to Darwin; he won a restricted race at Naas, a delightful course, before advancing to Group 3 level in winning The Minstrel Stakes at The Curragh.

The colt is prepared by Aiden O’Brien who can see bright prospects for the lightly raced youngster; he shows a lot of promise and has come to hand sooner than expected.

It was a good solid win at the end of 1600 metres in defeating the French campaigner, Gordon Lord Bryon, he had previously won the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp, Fine Top won the race twice, as did Sanedtki and Moorestyle.

Darwin is a son of the Vinery shuttler, Big Brown, he has been making headlines since he was sold as a yearling for $1.3 million at the Fasig –Tipton, Florida sale in March 2012.

“He is still a big baby but has got a great cruising speed and gets over the ground well, “ said Aidan O’Brien.
