Artie ShillerArtie Shiller was among the winners in the past week with the excellent win of Tiffany’s Lass at Moonee Valley, Flirtini winning at Belmont Park W A, Artie’s Dreamwinner at Morphettville, and Scallop, at Warrnambool. Racing Season ClosingAs the 2017-18 racing season draws to a close, with just one month remaining, Snitzel has a firm hold on the title of champion sire, with progeny earnings for the season of $28,353,873, well above his nearest rival on just over $15 million. The progeny of the top ten sires amounts to $140,608,217, and just two of the 10 sires are imported, High Chaparral and Street Cry. The only Victorian based sire in the top ten is Written Tycoon, he has done a magnificent job, but the rest are nowhere to be found. There is quite a few likely prospects among the Victorian sires, but will they be given the opportunity, that is the question?.
Woodside buys up at Gold CoastWoodside were among the major players at the Magic Millions brood mare sale on the Gold Coast. With four sires now located at Woodside, Written Tyc oon is well established as the most successful sire in Victoria, Cable Bay has had a season here and Rich Enuff has had two seasons, Tosen Stardom could get a fair share as he is the new kid on the block. Tosen Stardom is by Deep Impact from Admire Kirameki by End Sweep, who shuttled at one stage of his career from the U S to Arrowfield. Written TycoonWe can only marvel at the exploits of Written Tycoon, the only sire ever, that could command a service fee of $110,000, the highest in Victoria. He has earned it, at one stage of his career, it seems a long time ago now he stood at $2,000, and still nobody wanted him, there has been a lot of change since then. It is a remarkable story, the rise from oblivion to where he is today; it is a true rags to riches story. On Saturday at Belmont Park WA, his progeny filled the placings in the Glenroy Chaff (RS1MW), with Stageman defeating Route Eight’ty and Sophia’s Secret. Tyzone provided Written Tycoon with a win at Doomben, and Diamond Tycoon saluted for the sire at Morphettville Written Tycoon has three sons that will assist him as a sire of sires, Rich Enuff, Winning Rupert, and Capitalist, the Golden Slipper success standing at Newgate
Merchant Navy, the same horse that was narrowly beaten in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington, in mid Mach, opened up his European campaign with a win at The Curragh in Ireland. He was impressive in winning in the Wetherbys Greenland’s 1200 metres, he carried top weight. The intention would be to show Merchant Navy off, prior to the Northern Hemisphere breeding season that commences in March. His sire, Fastnet Rock, was well received in Europe, and Merchant Navy has certainly made an auspicious debut, winning at The Curragh. He most likely will continue to see the season out racing in Ireland, go to stud there and return to Australia in 12 months time
Impending has nailed a certain stud career after winning the Kingston Smith Cup at Doomben, on Saturday. He is by Lonhro, among the most remarkable horses we have known, but so few have never taken the time to fully analyse him. Lonhro is now approaching his twentieth year within a few months; he has stood the test of time as no other thoroughbred in the world. The word champion can be loosely applied on any horse, but there is no question of that about Lonhro, he is a champion on two fronts. A champion racehorse, of that there is no question, he won 26 races, 11 at Group 1 Level, 9 Group 2 level, and only out of a place 4 times, in a career of 35 starts. He has since become a prominent sire of sires, with the Golden Slipper winner, Pierro, becoming a much sought after sire, Denman, who is out of a Vain mare, and Exosphere who went to stud in 2016, and followed up with a season in France.
