Zebedee - A revelation in Europe

Zebedee is proving a revelation in Europe, with his daughter, Charline Royale, finishing second in the Prestigious Listed Premio Pandolfi, in Rome.

From three starts she has saluted twice, maybe she has done enough by European standards, they rarely over race their fillies.

Whether Charline Royale will be tried again is uncertain, her two wins have been over 1000 metres and 1100 metres.

Her dam, Royal Majestic, won over 1700 metres and 1600 metres, is by Tobougg , her only two foals have both won.

Zebedee is engaged in his fourth season at Cornerstone, a portion of the famous Lindsay Park, where Without Fear created records all those years ago.

He is an exciting horse; he had loads of racecourse ability, yet sparingly raced his success as a sire has been well recognised in Europe.

His sire line is dominant in Australia, particularly through I Am Invincible; he sired winners of over $10 million last seson.

Sam Hayes has given Zebedee every opportunity, he will be ready to fire this time next year.

Sir Prancealot for Cornerstone

Sam Hayes has wasted no time in securing Sir Prancealot to stand at Cornerstone; he was a brilliant performer on both sides of the English Channel.

He has had a remarkable season, his first, siring 32 winners of 46 races, a young sire foaled in 2010 he has got off to a flying start, well ahead of Frankel, as both went to stud in the same season.

Sir Prancealot is a sprinter, he had a good fleet of foot, his race record was impressive, from his six starts he won three times, including the time honoured Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster, and the Sandown National Stakes at Listed level.

He also acquitted himself quite well in France, he was not far short of the best two year olds there, he was well up to Group level in the Maisons-Laffitte Prix Robert Papin Group 2, and was far from disgraced at Deauville when fourth in the Prix Morny Group 1.

On retiring from racing, trainer Richard Hannon junior, said, “Sir Prancealot had a great attitude and an awful lot of ability, and is a gentleman to deal with.”

It’s a great pity that his racing career came to an abrupt ending after a training injury, as his performance in the Flying Childers, over five furlongs (1000 metres), was really a stunning performance.

His sire, Tamayuz, won five races in all, two as a juvenile, capping off his brief racing career by winning the mile in the Chantilly Prix Jean Prat Group 1,he has proved a consistent sire, from 203 runners he is responsible for siring 117 winners, including G Force, winner of the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup.

Sir Prancealot was the sprinter and his half brother, Nice Applause by Royal Applause, was the middle distance performer, winning 10 races from 1800 to 2000 metres, all in France.

The dam of the duo, Mona Em, was foaled in Ireland; she won twice in Germany and France, with the four dams in the pedigree producing no less than 26 winners.

Sir Prancealot had a marvellous turn of foot, a shame that his racing career was curtailed as a result of an injury.

He is a precocious young horse, stamping himself as an exciting acquisition to Cornerstone Stud, and above all a nice horse, sires don’t need to be over raced, he is proving that point as he is getting  winners, and more than capable of injecting speed into pedigrees.

Valentia Showing Promise

Valentia is off to a flying start at stud, showing positive results with the first mares covered at Cornerstone Stud Angaston.

The son of Fastnet Rock, who was sold as a yearling for $1.35 million, is proving fertile and will cover at least 80 mares in his first season.

Sons of Fastnet Rock are well proven as sires, hence their popularity, Velentia he is a high quality horse with an excellent pedigree and all the necessary credentials to make a successful sire.

Valentia received a high rating from Gai Waterhouse, claiming he was arguably the best looking colt ever seen at Tulloch Lodge.

She added,” attitude wise he is perfect and most important factor he had a great will to win,” she said.

Valentia was not over raced, just the eight starts, he was in the money five times, twice as a two year old winning the Group 2 Skyline Stakes at Randwick over 1200 metres, and was placed twice at Group level.

Previous winners of the Group 2 Skyline Stakes include Hinchinbrook, Snitzel and Choisir, all highly successful sires.

His sire, Fastnet Rock has exceeded all expectations, he has shuttled to the U K with success in both hemispheres, twice champion leading Australian sire, over 740 winners and 91 Stakes winners.

The is no weak links in the sire line of Valentia, he is line bred to the great Danzig, as was quoted,” he had speed in the extreme.

Thoroughbreds in the Barossa

The Barossa Valley of South Australia, is noted for the fine wines it producers, and
thoroughbreds that roam its lush pastures.

Each complements the other, it’s where time pauses for a mere moment to appreciate the values of the magnificent country terrain.

This is where the late Colin Hayes OBE AM, founder of Lindsay Park, entertained royalty and where some of the finest thoroughbred racehorses have been bred and reared.

Sam Hayes is now following on from his grandfather, who was the most successful trainer and breeder this part of the world has known.

Sam is not likely to train, certainly not at this stage, however, as a breeder he is becoming a force to be reckoned with, he has employed the right people who are dedicated and enjoy working among horses.

Cornerstone Stud, a part of the old Lindsay Park property, is a prime piece of horse country with its big gums providing shade for stock in the hot months of summer.

Cornerstone is well set up with an excellent selection of sires, with the latest to take up residence, Free Eagle, a highly acclaimed son of High Chaparral, the dual Epsom and Irish Derby success.

Free Eagle was lightly raced having just the eight starts, winning at two three and four years, his performance at four was exceptional in the Prince of Wales Stakes Group 1 at Royal Ascot, beating a class field including The Grey Gatsby, who was well beaten into second place, plus Gailo Chop and Criterion.

He was ridden by seven time’s champion Irish jockey, Pat Smullen ,he was heard to say, “I genuinely think that horse, Free Eagle, is the best I have ever ridden.”

That drew favourable comments from his trainer, Dermot Weld, “this is a beautiful colt with a lovely attitude, great conformation and temperament, everything a serious horse needs.”

Free Eagle is bred on the same cross as the unbeaten Frankel, who has met with extraordinary results, with first crop of racing age.

He defeated a high class field in the Prince of Wales Stakes over a genuine 10 furlongs; he has cemented his future as a sire. If the intention is to breed the classic winner, this is the direction leading breeders in Europe take.

Polished Gem, the dam of Free Eagle, is a winning daughter of Danehill, she won as a two year old over 1400 metres and has produced five foals, four have been winners.
