Valentia Showing Promise

Valentia is off to a flying start at stud, showing positive results with the first mares covered at Cornerstone Stud Angaston.

Sons of Fastnet Rock are well proven as sires, hence their popularity, Velentia he is a high quality horse with an excellent pedigree and all the necessary credentials to make a successful sire.

Valentia received a high rating from Gai Waterhouse, claiming he was arguably the best looking colt ever seen at Tulloch Lodge.

She added,” attitude wise he is perfect and most important factor he had a great will to win,” she said.

Valentia was not over raced, just the eight starts, he was in the money five times, twice as a two year old winning the Group 2 Skyline Stakes at Randwick over 1200 metres, and was placed twice at Group level.

Previous winners of the Group 2 Skyline Stakes include Hinchinbrook, Snitzel and Choisir, all highly successful sires.

Thoroughbreds in the Barossa

The Barossa Valley of South Australia, is noted for the fine wines it producers, and
thoroughbreds that roam its lush pastures.

Each complements the other, it’s where time pauses for a mere moment to appreciate the values of the magnificent country terrain.

This is where the late Colin Hayes OBE AM, founder of Lindsay Park, entertained royalty and where some of the finest thoroughbred racehorses have been bred and reared.

Sam Hayes is now following on from his grandfather, who was the most successful trainer and breeder this part of the world has known.

Sam is not likely to train, certainly not at this stage, however, as a breeder he is becoming a force to be reckoned with, he has employed the right people who are dedicated and enjoy working among horses.

Cornerstone Stud, a part of the old Lindsay Park property, is a prime piece of horse country with its big gums providing shade for stock in the hot months of summer.

Cornerstone is well set up with an excellent selection of sires, with the latest to take up residence, Free Eagle, a highly acclaimed son of High Chaparral, the dual Epsom and Irish Derby success.

Free Eagle was lightly raced having just the eight starts, winning at two three and four years, his performance at four was exceptional in the Prince of Wales Stakes Group 1 at Royal Ascot, beating a class field including The Grey Gatsby, who was well beaten into second place, plus Gailo Chop and Criterion.

He was ridden by seven time’s champion Irish jockey, Pat Smullen ,he was heard to say, “I genuinely think that horse, Free Eagle, is the best I have ever ridden.”

That drew favourable comments from his trainer, Dermot Weld, “this is a beautiful colt with a lovely attitude, great conformation and temperament, everything a serious horse needs.”

Free Eagle is bred on the same cross as the unbeaten Frankel, who has met with extraordinary results, with first crop of racing age.

He defeated a high class field in the Prince of Wales Stakes over a genuine 10 furlongs; he has cemented his future as a sire. If the intention is to breed the classic winner, this is the direction leading breeders in Europe take.

Polished Gem, the dam of Free Eagle, is a winning daughter of Danehill, she won as a two year old over 1400 metres and has produced five foals, four have been winners.

Zebedee kicking goals in the U K

Exciting times ahead for Cornerstone Stud, with news filtering through that Zebedee, has excellent prospects of siring his first Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot, via Magical Memory.

Magical Memory, by Zebedee, already has Black Type to his credit, having won the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes over 1200 metres, and adding to his win last month at Newmarket, he is sure to be a major player at Royal Ascot in July.

He has inherited the pace of his sire, Zebedee, who should have remained unbeaten, as it was he won six of his seven starts.

Zebedee has already left his mark in the UK and is about to do the same in South Australia, at Sam Hayes’s Cornerstone Stud at Angaston.

He is more than capable of doing what he has already achieved in England, installing pace into his progeny.

The ingredients are there, he is doing the job that is required, getting progeny of good cruising speed and sound good types, well framed horses.

Zebedee is by Invincible Spirit who is no stranger here, he formerly stood three or four seasons at Chatswood Stud, where he has since proved a sire of sires, evidenced by the outstanding success of I Am Invincible, a much sought after sire, his progeny command a lot of attention in the auction ring as yearlings, they develop into brilliant two year olds.

Our racing is all about an early return, suggesting that Zebedee is that likely source, it is encouraging to see his progeny doing so remarkably well in Europe, however, we must never lose sight that it takes two to tango, the mare is also a contributing factor.

The first crop of foals by Zebedee hit the track, resulting in 32 winners, and his second crop produced 27 winners, he was readily acclaimed as champion European freshman sire, with his yearlings selling for 8 .8 times his service fee.

Zebedee covered 100 mares in his first season at Cornerstone, he is getting the opportunity he so richly deserves, first crop foals to be born here are due within a few months and are eagerly awaited.

There is also some depth in his pedigree, his dam, Cozy Maria, won at 2000 metres and has produced four foals to win.
