First Winner for Fighting Sun

Platinum Mam’selle provided her sire, the unbeaten Fighting Sun, with his first winner when she rendered a sound performance in scoring at Trentham, NZ on Saturday.

The filly will chase higher honours now, as her sights are set on the Group 3 Phoenix Park two year old Classic, over 1200 metres, in early February.

She looks as if she will, as she finished very strongly and still won with a bit in hand, she is a promising youngster.

Her trainer doesn’t mince matters either; she could then go on to the Group 1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sire’s Produce Stakes over, 1400 metres at Awapuni in the autumn.

“The filly learnt a lot from her first start, she keeps getting better,” said her trainer, Lisa Latta.

There is a lot of upside to Platinum Mam’selle, according to rider, Mark Du Plessis, “the run was very encouraging, she gave me a good feel, she is a nice filly, “he said.

She is the second foal of her dam, Miss Fascination, by Redoute’s Choice, all four dams are winners .

A big week for Magnus

Magnus fires up in the West

Magnus claimed his third Group 1 success as a sire when Great Shot won the million dollar Railway Stakes, at Ascot in far off Perth.

And a similar performance was repeated on Saturday last, at the same venue, when The River was successful, he is also by Magnus, except there was no million dollar prize attached to the race, and Lady Magnus won at Terang.

Magnus is an excellent sire, he has a dominant seventy per cent record of runners to winners, progeny of well over $25 million, his yearlings averaged in 2017 over $90,000, and selling up to $215,000, that reads better than bank interest.

He was a good racehorse that was beyond question; he competed at the highest level, a Group1 sire that is the ultimate.

Besides winning at Group1 level he faced up to the elite company of Weekend Haussler, Miss Andretti and the invincible, Takeover Target, he conquered the world.

Magnus is a product of a super sire line being by Flying Spur, a Golden Slipper success, one of a quartet of winners of the Slipper, trained in succession by Lee Freedman.

Flying Spur defeated Octagonal, and the very good filly, Millrich, is was a stellar year for two year olds.

It was obvious that Magnus was bred for speed, his dam, Scandinavia, had sheer brilliance, as did her sire, Snippets, he was something to behold, the family of Wilander, Black Caviar, and the highly promising sire, All Too Hard.

His second dam, Song of Norway, by Vain, he raced as if had a wing on every hoof, a champion racehorse and the ultimate as a sire.

In the official general sire’s table, 50 sires are listed, 5 based in Victoria, Written Tycoon at 11, Magnus 18, Reward For Effort 35, Manhattan Rain 43, Reset 50.

Magnus continued on his the winning spree at Kyneton for Sun Stud, winning the final race when Bellaria won and Moshe got into the winning vein with a winner at Gosford.

Stars Align … Classy For Sun Stud’s Palentino

Dual Group1winner, Palentino, is poised to open the batting with the star line up of mares at Sun Stud this spring.

Retired to Sun Stud earlier this year, after a career which included victories in the Group1 Australian Guineas and the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes, the only horse, apart from the legendary Zabeel, to achieve the double – Palentino has caught the imagination of broodmare owners throughout Australia.

“We knew Palentino would be popular given his record, and the fact that he is an outstanding type, but the level of interest has been terrific,” Sun Stud’s Nominations Manager, Phil Marshall, enthused.

“Aside from the tremendous uptake of outside mares, Sun Stud will also be supporting the stallion heavily with our own broodmare band.”

Among the Sun Stud broodmares lining up for a date with Palentino, is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Pretty Perfect, from the$5 million mare Milanova, a Sadler’s Wells mare from a Group 2 two year old Langoustine, a half sister to the dam of this season’s two year old, Single Bullet, a half sister to Flemington Group 2 Vintedge, and stakes placed Hussonet mare, currently in foal to Vancouver.

Meanwhile Sun Stud have been quick to embrace Palentino, and among the broodmares coming off the farm is the winning Elusive Quality mare, Shabtis, a half sister to five time Group 1 winner Mummify, and the dam of Melbourne Group winner, Take Pride.

Owned by leading Victorian breeder, Don Byrne, who has bred several stakes winners including Encosta de Lago ‘s Group 1 winner, Ultra Fantasy, while Shabtis had her Written Tycoon colt sell for $530.000 at the 2017 Australian Easter Sale Yearling Sale, and the weanling full sister made $235,000 at the Great Southern Sale.

“There’s a great deal to like about Palentino, “ Don points out, “apart from being a brilliant racehorse, he’s a magnificent looking creature and is very well bred, besides I’m looking forward to seeing the first of his progeny,” he added.

Others set to find their way to Sun Stud include the dam of multiple stakes winner and half sister to the dam of dual Group1 success, Kermadec , also sired by Teofilo, the Group 2 winner Avienus, the Fastnet Rock, filly Close To My Heart ,closely related to Machiavellian, a stakes winning mare closely related to Snippets mare, from a half sister to Danzero, multiple winning daughter of Group 1 winner Mon Mekki a stakes winner of 10 races, and a winning half sister to stakes winners, Excites Zelady and Zelady’s Night Out.

Palentino’s race record was clearly an attraction, particularly the way he backed up in the Autumn.
