Two State Double For Magnus

Miss Wynette was the first leg of a two state double for her sire Magnus, when she recorded an all the way wins in the Bert Bryant Handicap at Caulfield.

Magnus found it hard to win beyond 1200 metres, yet he is siring horses winning up to 2000 metres.

Tears of Joy chased the winner Miss Wynette for most of the way, getting within a short head when the post was reached.

This was her best win to date, aided by a great ride from a youthful Brandon Stockdale; he claimed the 3 kg that brought the mare in at a more acceptable weight.

When the winner was well ridden by the youthful apprentice, there was no panic involved, he rode the mare right out, he is a promising young rider.

Brandon is apprenticed to his father, Frankie Stockdale, at Sale; he was a former jumps jockey who met with success over the tall timber.

Trainer, Tony McEvoy, was on the missing list, he left Michael Shepardson in charge of the mare and to handle the media as well.

Punters were with the favourite Testability, she went out short enough, after two good runs at Sandown she was handy all the way, but just wilted on the run.

Moshe strikes at Listed Level

Moshe, the full brother to Black Caviar and the half brother to All Too Hard, sired his first winner at Morphettville on Saturday last, when Moshki recorded the first winner for her sire in the Listed Cinderella Stakes.

That was her sixth start and she has only been out of a place the once, with stakes earnings not that much short of $100,000.

Trained by Terry and Karina O’Sullivan, the filly had run a nice race at Moonee Valley to Dam Ready, hence the win was not unexpected.

Whilst Moshki was the first winner for her sire, who has had nine runners from his first crop of 123 foals, which is a small percentage to date.

Moshe was a brilliant young colt, he set tongues wagging when first up at Bendigo, setting a record over 1000 metres and did similar twice at Moonee Valley.

In hindsight, his service fee of $6,000 only encourages mediocrity in the quality of mares that a sire services, a more realistic fee, at least, should have been doubled.

It is still just early days; there is still a lot of water to go under the bridge, with still 114 foals somewhere about yet to race.

Only two yearlings were entered and sold at the Premier Sale, Lot 244 made $40,000, and Lot 597 sold for $45,000, those yearlings are sure to be given a chance, they were purchased to race.

Wanted strikes with a double

Wanted burst onto the scene siring a winning double on New Year’s Day at Flemington, when Want To Rock, an unraced two year old, won the New Year Plate.

She led for most of the race and was challenged more than once in the straight, but simply refused to give in under pressure.

That is a positive sign, she is just not a speed machine and could develop into quite a handy filly and get further as the races draw out in distance.

Want To Rock is the first foal of her dam Rock the Moment, to race, her only previous foal by Bel Esprit died, she has since been covered in the last two seasons by So You Think.

Rough Justice completed a double for Wanted when he won the Red Tempo Handicap over 1000 metres; he has increased his stake earnings by an additional $44,000, with a total of $370,000, from 16 starts, five wins and eight placings.

Often too much is expected of sires with their first couple of crops, however, for no obvious reasons there could be a transitional stage that has never been taken seriously into consideration.

Wanted CustomWanted

All sires don’t necessarily follow pedigree, there is always going to be exceptions, we must allow for that and accept it, there are no options.

Wanted was endowed with a fair amount of talent when racing, he did win a Newmarket Handicap and was placed four times at Group level.

His yearlings sold to $220, 000 at last year’s Premier Sale, and he will again be well represented at this year’s sales.

While Wanted commenced with a bang, siring a double, his stud mate, Magnus, is ticking over just nicely with Magna Rossa recording her first city win and certainly it want be her last, there is a lot of upside to her with a double strain of Vain, which is a bonus.

Magnus is proving a great asset at stud, he had an amazing turn of foot inherited from his sire, Flying Spur, bred on that formidable cross Danehill – Snippets.

Both Wanted and Magnus each have 10 quality yearlings in the Melbourne Premier Sale.

Bel Esprit on the crest of a wave

Since the re-location of Bel Esprit, from Eliza Park International Victoria, to its sister stud in Queensland, the son of Royal Academy has been on quite a roll.

He really opened up with a double on the middle day at Caulfield, via Tilla Bell Rings and the very promising Keen Array, plus Killawarra scoring at Wodonga, while the three year old filly, Riapinka, trained by Kris Lees, showed her rivals a clean set of plates at Wyong, winning with ease, and Belle Melba won at Morphettville for Caulfield trainer, Clinton McDonald.

Bel Esprit has never been fully appreciated in his home state, at the time of his departure for Queensland he was the highest progeny stakes earner in Victoria, with $48,226,041 to his credit, the best sire in the state, it is all about money earned.

It has been a good season for Eliza Park International, besides Bel Esprit, Wanted has had a winner at Pakenham, and Statue of Liberty is on a roll at present with winners at Pakenham, Ascot and Wodonga.

First Foal By Fiorente

Fiorente is a dad, his very first foal, a filly was born two weeks ago, she’s a real daisy cutter, her winning dam, Libertas, has trouble keeping up with the youngster when she decides to go on her regular galloping spree.

Mr. Bill Stapleton is the proud owner of the filly foal.

Magnus In Fine Form

Magnus is firing on all cylinders; he is having an amazing season siring four winners over the last three city fixtures.

His yearlings are always in great demand at the various sales, he is popular for good reasons, he gets results that every breeder and owner are looking for, it is all about winning.

Magnus was a good racehorse, he won four of his 24 starts, he was placed 11 times, mainly in Group races, except for bad luck his race record would have been more impressive.

Yet he is doing a remarkable job as a sire, his progeny are consistent, tough, and are not necessarily just sprinters, they win over a variety of distances.

He is by Flying Spur, a Golden Slipper Stakes success, yet maybe his finest hour was the All Aged Stakes, a brilliant win by a three year old against the older horses.

There is not a weak link in his dam line, it is exceptional, his dam, Scandinavia, was a good race filly, as a brood mare she was a giant in every respect, never given the recognition that she so richly deserved.

Mares of her quality are rare, like finding a diamond in the desert, it rarely happens.

Eliza Park

Eliza Park figured prominently in the winner’s circle over the weekend with Magnus and Bel Esprit each siring a trio of winners.

Magnus was at the top of his game siring a winning double at Caulfield, with Volcanic Ash and Miss Promiscuity, taking out the honours with the latter stamping her authority at weight for age winning the Sir John Monash Stakes, plus Black Type alongside her name.

Volcanic Ash and Miss Promiscuity both have quite a bit in common, they were bred by Robert Crabtree, from mares by Distant Music, however, there is no relationship involved.

Distant Music was quite a responsible sire in Europe, but never measured up to the same success when he came into the southern hemisphere.

Magnus was also responsible for siring You Never Know, a Maiden Handicap winner at Donald.

In all, Magnus has had a remarkable season; he is among the few consistent sires in Victoria.

His progeny are popular at the sales as he gets a high percentage of winners to runners is 48.1 per cent.

While Bel Esprit has left Victoria for the warmer weather of sunny Queensland, he has proved a great acquisition for Victoria; he is the third highest sire by progeny earnings to stand here.

A Caulfield winner, via Pilly’s Wish, was rewarded for her consistency; she has not run a poor race in her last six outings.

Cheeky Babe gave her rivals something to chase at Newcastle, she is out of the David Pfieffer yard at Warwick Farm, out of a Spartacus mare, the brilliant colt, Rich Enuff, is also from a daughter of Spartacus.

A winner at Donald, per medium of Simply Ming, completed the treble for Bel Esprit from The Dash, by More Than Ready.
