First Foal By FiorenteFiorente is a dad, his very first foal, a filly was born two weeks ago, she’s a real daisy cutter, her winning dam, Libertas, has trouble keeping up with the youngster when she decides to go on her regular galloping spree. Mr. Bill Stapleton is the proud owner of the filly foal.
Magnus In Fine FormMagnus is firing on all cylinders; he is having an amazing season siring four winners over the last three city fixtures. His yearlings are always in great demand at the various sales, he is popular for good reasons, he gets results that every breeder and owner are looking for, it is all about winning. Magnus was a good racehorse, he won four of his 24 starts, he was placed 11 times, mainly in Group races, except for bad luck his race record would have been more impressive. Yet he is doing a remarkable job as a sire, his progeny are consistent, tough, and are not necessarily just sprinters, they win over a variety of distances. He is by Flying Spur, a Golden Slipper Stakes success, yet maybe his finest hour was the All Aged Stakes, a brilliant win by a three year old against the older horses. There is not a weak link in his dam line, it is exceptional, his dam, Scandinavia, was a good race filly, as a brood mare she was a giant in every respect, never given the recognition that she so richly deserved. Mares of her quality are rare, like finding a diamond in the desert, it rarely happens.
Eliza ParkEliza Park figured prominently in the winner’s circle over the weekend with Magnus and Bel Esprit each siring a trio of winners. Magnus was at the top of his game siring a winning double at Caulfield, with Volcanic Ash and Miss Promiscuity, taking out the honours with the latter stamping her authority at weight for age winning the Sir John Monash Stakes, plus Black Type alongside her name. Volcanic Ash and Miss Promiscuity both have quite a bit in common, they were bred by Robert Crabtree, from mares by Distant Music, however, there is no relationship involved. Distant Music was quite a responsible sire in Europe, but never measured up to the same success when he came into the southern hemisphere. Magnus was also responsible for siring You Never Know, a Maiden Handicap winner at Donald. In all, Magnus has had a remarkable season; he is among the few consistent sires in Victoria. His progeny are popular at the sales as he gets a high percentage of winners to runners is 48.1 per cent. While Bel Esprit has left Victoria for the warmer weather of sunny Queensland, he has proved a great acquisition for Victoria; he is the third highest sire by progeny earnings to stand here. A Caulfield winner, via Pilly’s Wish, was rewarded for her consistency; she has not run a poor race in her last six outings. Cheeky Babe gave her rivals something to chase at Newcastle, she is out of the David Pfieffer yard at Warwick Farm, out of a Spartacus mare, the brilliant colt, Rich Enuff, is also from a daughter of Spartacus. A winner at Donald, per medium of Simply Ming, completed the treble for Bel Esprit from The Dash, by More Than Ready. Eliza Park International

Another star for Bel EspritBel Esprit, the most underrated sire in Victoria, and the best with progeny earnings, in excess of $41 million dollars, has sired another star in Sistonic. Without drawing comparisons between her and the three quarter sister, Black Caviar, this would be ridiculous however, she is a high class filly with a lot quality and a touch of class, and she is in there with a bright future.
When Bel Esprit was offered as a yearling, all the so called good judges and experts steered away from him due to a hock they considered was not right, that did not deter the late Kurt Stern, he bought him for $9,000 and laughed all the way to the bank. Bel Esprit won eight races including the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Doomben 10,000, and was placed five times from his 19 starts. With over $40 million in progeny earnings he is by far the second highest stake earning sire ever to stand in Victoria. Bel Esprit is by Nijinsky’s brilliant son Royal Academy, he is proving a very good brood mare sire and quite dominant in present day pedigrees, the dam, Bespoken is by Vain, who had no peer as a sprinter. Both Black Caviar and Sistonic have a double cross of Vain within their pedigrees, he won the Golden Slipper Stakes and as a three year old he stepped out into open company winning twice at Group1 level, and once at Group 2 level, over the four days of the Victoria Racing Club’s Spring Carnival and became champion sire in 1984 after runner up the previous year to Sir Tristram.
Statue of Liberty ShinesStatue of Liberty is more than capable of getting a good horse, he has done it before and lightning has struck again in the form of Lucky Liberty who remains unbeaten after three starts. He has sired 34 stakes winners with progeny earnings of just over $31 million dollars, after having to miss two breeding seasons due to the outbreak of Equine Influenza in August of 2007. Formerly he stood at Blue Gum Farm, he shuttled for a season to Japan, when the E I drama was discovered he was forced to lose two breeding seasons in Australia, devastating for a horse of seven years of age. Two of the best years of his life gone, wasted, nothing to show for it at the time when his progeny were winning well, such as Hay List and Mic Mac and numerous other winning progeny. Now located at Eliza Park International, Statue of Liberty has been rejuvenated, he is on the crest of a wave at present, siring quite a number of winners of late besides the highly promising three year old Lucky Liberty, he looks the real deal and could easily win a Group 1 on his first preparation. Being by Storm Cat, Statue of Liberty has inherited the speed of his sire, whilst his dam line is exceptional. His dam, Charming Lassie, is a three quarter sister to A P Indy, by Seattle Slew, the pedigree is well endowed with Black Type

Eliza Park In For The Long HaulPhil Marshall, one of the enthusiastic young guns at Eliza Park Int., recently returned from a shopping spree at Newmarket with bloodstock advisor, David O’Callaghan. The purpose was to buy good quality young mares in foal to prominent sires, that is where the future lies, it has to be seen as an investment, and youth is the way to go. Phil is no stranger to Newmarket, he was born there, he comes from a racing family, his father is still involved in the industry. Bloodstock is at a premium in Britain and Ireland at present, with buyers worldwide in search of the best bloodlines, in many instances money becomes secondary. The only mare purchased out of the sale this time for Eliza Park Int. was Pure Excellence for 260,000 guineas, a four year old daughter of Exceed And Excel she is lightly raced, having won three races as a two year old and is currently in foal to Oasis Dream. “She has a nice pedigree, we really liked her, she has a great covering to a leading sire,” said David O’Callaghan. “We are in no hurry to bring her here, she will remain in our northern hemisphere operation, we have eight mares in the UK, Ireland and the U S,” he added. They will be bred to Dubawi, and Oasis Dream, while Kingman is on the short list coming into northern hemisphere spring season. Eliza Park Int. purchased 17 excellent mares on the Gold Coast earlier this year, with the majority covered this season by either Fiorente or Fighting Sun. |
