Everest is fully subscribed; Sydney has a 10 Million race, Peter V’landys, Chief Executive of New South Wales racing has announced that the 12 spots at $600,000 a pop have been snapped up.

News that all 12 spots were sold in less than two months, the race with its record prize money guaranteed, is up and running with the date already slotted in on Saturday, October 14.

The Everest will be run over 1200 metres at Royal Randwick, the winner’s purse is $5.8 million, runner up $1.425 million ,third $800,000, fourth $400,000, fifth $250,000, from sixth to twelve $175,000.

To secure a slot investors must commit $600,000 for three years, slots are transferrable.

The race is scheduled for the first day of the Melbourne Racing Club’s Spring Carnival, Caulfield Guineas Day, although it is not likely to have any great effect on the Caulfield fixture.

A Group 1 is a big occasion for any jockey, even the leading riders, they are not handed to you on a plate, you have to earn them.

As that was the last Group1 race in Victoria for the current racing season, she can now rest on her laurels.

It was a big occasion for a very popular and likeable young lady, with a brilliant future ahead of her, there will be more Group 1 wins for her, but the first one will always be the sweetest.

She has racing in her blood, over four generations, her great grandfather, Alex, trained at Wylong, beyond the Riverina in New South Wales.

It was tough going in those days, racing on ordinary tracks with ordinary horses; trainers had to be tough to survive.

Her grandfather, Mick, had two rides in New South Wales; first one was at Hay, when his mount took charge of proceedings in an encounter with a fence.

His second ride was more fruitful, he won a race at Jerilderie, he then came to Melbourne where he became apprenticed to Roy Roach, a brilliant trainer with gallopers and harness horses, he was a highly respected racing identity.

Roy Mallyon, an older brother to Mick, trained at Kilmore for a time, before possibly heading back to New South Wales.

Mick rode a lot of winners, he was strong and rode at a competitive weight, he rode a lot of winners, for Cyril Beechey in particular.

Mick married Dianne Bones, a daughter of Flemington trainer Roy Bones, he was riding in the era of Roy Higgins and Harry White and Brent Thompson, he rode three Caulfield Cup winners, Bunratty Castle, Gay Icarus and Leilani.

Mick’s two son’ s, Brett and Cory, were too heavy to ride professionally, however, they both rode at the Picnics, successfully winning several premierships, while the only daughter in the Mallyon family, Lisa, is the mother of Jordon, he rode successfully in Perth.

Brett married Mary Divers, she was also an amateur jockey, the mother of Katelyn who rode her first Group 1 winner on Friday night, while her brother Andrew won the Mornington Cup on Tally, a very rare double, don’t worry about the odds, it is not likely to be repeated.

When work was finishing up for the day, A B Hancock issued instructions that he had to be called when the mare, Miss Disco, was about to foal.

As it was cold, wet and windy, he would have preferred to spend the night in a comfortable armchair by a warm fire, and his favourite beverage, a swig of bourbon.

Normally the staff would attend to the foaling, however, Hancock wanted to be on hand this time to make sure everything went smoothly, Miss Disco was foaling to Nasrullah, it would be the first foal by him born in the U S.

Nasrullah was purchased by Bull Hancock, from the old Aga Khan, the price was never mentioned, except to say it would put the national debt to shame

Miss Disco was owned by Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps, a long standing client of Claiborne, and a prominent breeder for many years.

Once Miss Disco delivered her foal safely, Hancock was about to make his way back to his warm fire, when he was summoned that Knight’s Daughter was also about to foal to Princequillo.

That was no big deal really, there were still mares to foal, they didn’t need him now, the staff was well equipped, veterinary attention was always on hand, the fire could have gone out and someone could have knocked off the bourbon.

Eventually the foals were weaned and branded and not by design, they shared the same paddock with a number of other colts, whether they could run fast enough was in the unknown.

The day of reckoning was coming, the first born colt from Miss Disco was named Bold Ruler, he won 23 races from 33 starts, while the colt from Knight’s Daughter was Round Table, he won 43 races from 66 starts.

New Zealand stayer, Pacorus, is looking for a berth in the Sydney Cup, could shorten on how he performs in the tomorrows Drymix Cement Bay of Plenty Cup 0ver 2100 metres at Tauranga.

Trainer, Chris Wood, has had the view the five year old gelding by Travistock, was an ideal prospect for the Group1 Sydney Cup run over 3200 metres at Royal Randwick on April 8.

However, the gelding did put in an ordinary run this time in from a summer break, leaving him equal 28 in order of entry for the $2 million staying test.

“He’s still in the race, but I’m getting behind the eight ball and he’d needs to win well tomorrow to be in the reckoning,” said Wood

“We are still a chance, he worked well yesterday, he may have turned the corner, let’s hope so,” he added.

The gelding has put together seven wins from 24 starts, Pacorus has made a quick ascension through the staying ranks last winter, winning five of his six starts from late June to early October.

He is adaptable on rain affected tracks, the gelding would relish the current conditions in Sydney, he is nicely treated with 50 kg for the Sydney Cup.

Rising Red is out of Saturday’s Group 2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill, and is likely to be spelled.

Trainers, Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, will now rely on Anaheim to fly the stable flag in Saturday week’s $3 million Group 1 Australian Derby.

Rising Red has enjoyed a lucrative campaign, with a Sandown win preceding his second to Gingernuts in the Group New Zealand Australian Derby.
