Glenlogan Park changes direction

Queensland’s leading stud farm, Glenlogan Park, has for more than a decade now announced a chance in direction, the stud will not be standing stallions htis season, nor in the foreseeable future.

“This is something we have been angling towards for a number of years, with the national scene going from strength to strength in recent times, now seemed the ideal time to make the transition, “ Glenlongan principal Jon Haseler said.

“Our focus will be on producing the very best yearlings and racehorsess we can, and presenting them at all of the major sales around the country, “he added.

Glenlogan Park has been home to a number of successful sires, Falvelon, Jet Power, Real Saga , Rich Enuff, Rothesay and Show A Heart.

T B Q A President, Basil Nolan, said it’s sad to see Glenlogan Park relinquish its stallions.

“They have been a long standing supporter of the Queensland industry for many years and have had tremendous success as one of the State’s leading studs ,producing many champion sires and runners, season after season, “ said Basil Nolan.

In future Eureka Stud will stand Real Saga, Lyndhurst will be the new home for Rothesay and Jet Spur will go to Grandview stud.

Training partners in hot water

Training partners, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, are to face a charge of conduct prejudicial to the image of racing, for substituting three horses in a televised Breakfast with The Stars, in a track gallop last week.

The Randwick based pair were granted an Adjournment by Racing New South Wales stewards yesterday, so as to seek advice after they were charged under Australian Racing Rule 175 (a)

Waterhouse and Bott were charged after stewards established three of the stables racehorses, English, Serena and Debonairly, did not conduct track work on the Randwick course proper on April 4th, as programmed at the Breakfast With The Stars function.

They were substituted by three other horses, Fabrizio, Sort After and Stampede, with three horses carrying the same set of colours as the nominated horses.

Waterhouse was critical of the charge, claiming the offence was worth only of a warning.

McDonald loses appeal

James McDonald, among the most talented jockeys, not only in the Southern Hemisphere but the Northern Hemisphere, has lost his appeal for betting.

In fact it was just one single bet of a $1,000, but enough to wreck the career of the highest paid jockey in the world.

While it is believed he was conned into the bet, he has another 13 months to sweat it out, and no guarantee he will ever come back as good as he was, or given the same opportunities.

He committed the mortal sin, he had a bet, a lousey bet, he didn’t need it, he had the world at his feet, riding in England at the height of the Northern Hemisphere season and returning to Australia for the major stakes races in the spring and the autumn, riding for the most lucrative racing stable in the world.

Surely he had to be conned, I have never taking him for a fool, nor should anyone else, a likeable young man with a great personality and a genius in the saddle.

Why!, a word he would have asked himself a thousand times over and never received a plausible answer.

Winx does it again

Winx can only be described as among the best mares of any generation, she travels so smoothly, it is just a matter of a slight squeeze from jockey Hugh Bowman and she answers the challenge immediately, with a minimum of fuss.

She is the star of the show where ever she goes, there is no question, the best mare possibly at weight for age without doubt.

Hartnell may have worn the crown except for bumping into Winx, if she was not around he would have claimed championship status.

A big crowd at Royal Randwick were sent into raptures when the superstar moved up on the outside of the second favourite, Hartnell, rounding the home turn and poked her nose in front.

Connections, who admitted to bigger that normal pre race nerves, had nothing to worry about when she pulled well clear of her rivals to win by five and a quarter lengths.

“It was pretty special,” said winning rider Hugh Bowmen, “I’m lost for words.”

“She’s such a special athlete and I’m so proud of her.”

“She’s a supreme athlete as I said, and to be a part of her journey is very special to me,” added Hugh Bowman.

Winx has now won 17 races in succession and her 12th at Group 1 level.

New Zealander takes out Oaks

New Zealand filly, Bonneval, gave her rivals a good old fashioned short and sides in winning the James Boag’s Premium Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick.

She was that far back on the home turn, she would’nt have appeared on the radar until the horses were half way up the straight.

She won the New Zealand Oaks in similar fashion, she is now sure to be popular when markets are framed on both the spring Cups.

Bonneval is prepared by the elite training team of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, who would have a strong hand in the spring Cups, as they won also the Derby with Jon Snow last Saturday week

Bonneval looked the logical as she had won the Oaks in New Zealand, plus her three previous wins were at Black Type level.

She was purchased as Lot 432, being by Makfi, he did win the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket and he has sired 154 runners for 85 winners, which is a handy 50 per cent, his oldest progeny are three year olds.

There is no doubt that the stable will have a strong hand in the major races during the spring, certainly the Caulfield Cup.

Chautauqua at his best in T J Smith

Chautauqua did the near impossible, coming from absolute last on the home turn at Royal Randwick, to win the T J Smith Stakes in what would be best described as a barn storm performance.

Betting tickets would have been discarded long before the home turn, he just couldn’t win, but he did!

It is doubtful if we have seen a better performance than that, in a 1200 metres Group 1 race, since the era of Bernborough.

Chautauqua three T J Smith Stakes and his great win in Hong Kong to his credit, he seems to save his best performances for right handed tracks.

John Hawkes, who shares the training partnership with his two sons, Michael and Wayne, issued the riding instructions to Tommy Berry, loud and clear.

“Stay near the fence if you are going to win this race, if you are going to win this race you will have to come late, “said Hawkes senior.

John Hawkes saw the race from the couch in his home, there was quite some excitement, he shared it with his wife Claire.

There is nothing left for Chautauqua at present, but a rich carrot is awaiting in the wings come October 12
