I Am Invincible is a prolific sire of winners, he is the complete athlete, he claims the attention of all that visit Yarraman Park. He has since been joined by his son Hellbent, winner of the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley, back in January. A wise move, he has been given ample time to let down, he goes to stud looking like a stallion rather than a racehorse, he is a last start winner of a Group 1, it doesn’t get any better than that. He was born at Yarraman Park Stud, Scone, within days after winning that Group 1 at Moonee Valley he was had nothing more to prove, he saved his best till last, maybe he knew more than we did. The brothers, Arthur and Harry Mitchell, have preferred to stand local sires with great success, including Magic Albert at one stage, I Am Invincible, the ill fated Hinchinbrook, and now, Hellbent. There was a period around in the late forties, and well into the sixties, when breeders shied away from the local bred sires, the theory being they were a generation away from imported blood. That theory is all old hat, Australia has been seen as a dumping ground for slow English staying horses, they hardly get out of a canter until they reach the halfway stage in many of the staying races. That has all changed now, the Australian bred horse can hold his head high, the boot is on the other foot now, our best are now shuttling to the U K, covering mares in both hemispheres.
