Robbie Griffiths buys up at Premier Sale

Robbie Griffiths was the major buyer at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale last week, securing 12 lots for an outlay of $1.220 million.

He purchased the horses that he had picked out and was well satisfied with the yearlings he selected, and with the prices he had to pay.

A big percentage of the winners he has trained have been purchased, as yearlings, out of the Oaklands Junction sales complex.

He has been a regular at the sales since he became an established trainer, he goes about his business with a minimum of fuss, whilst still a young man he has had plenty of experience buying horses to suit perspective clients.

Griffiths is well aware, if you intend to play in the big league you have to buy yearlings each year, otherwise you would soon be out of business, you just have to keep turning horses over in the hope of getting the good one.

Previously he had been on the sick list for a couple of months with a severe illness, thus he has missed quite a few race meetings of late, however, with good staff all has been ticking over nicely, and while the boss can have a few days from the races it is essential he is at the helm at yearling time.015_Custom

Mosheen’s Guineas Win Outstanding

Mosheen stamped herself as a high class filly in winning the Australian Guineas, her second Group 1 at Flemington, as she won the Oaks in the spring.

She was thrown in at the deep end in the Guineas after drawing the extreme outside gate in a field of 16 runners ,how she finished up one out from the fence, after 200 metres, was quite some feat.

Her rider, Danny Nikolic, then had to extricate her from a packed field on the home turn, from then on it was game over, she had too much class for her rivals running out an easy winner.

Mosheen winning the Australian Guineas

There was very little that could be said for those she defeated, it would be difficult to imagine any of the beaten brigade graduating into weight for age material.

It is hard to find any excuses for any of the horses beaten by Mosheen, she was far too dominant, she turned adversity into victory within a few strides.

The favourite, Helmet, reared at the start with the result he lost ground at the beginning, but hardly an excuse, he didn’t make up any ground at any stage of the race, the only plausible excuse, he has not come up this preparation, his trainer, Peter Snowden, was disappointed with the run and it showed on his face.

Mosheen will now press on to Sydney for the Coolmore Claaaic, her trainer, Robert Smerdon, will continue to train her here in the spring and then onto to Japan, where she is partly owned, for the northern hemisphere breeding season.

Weight worked in favour of Coldens Choice

A drop in weight of six kgs was the winning formula for Coldens Choice, who was anchored down with 60 kgs at his most recent appearance at Flemington two weeks ago.

The weight made all the difference, at his previous outing he didn’t cope with the poundage, in the Mittys Handicap yesterday he was racing mid-field, always primed up to make his winning run.

He has been a consistent horse this preparation, with the exception of his previous start, while he is down in the weights and allowed to roll along he will win further races.

The favourite at $2.20, Under The Hat, was set an herculean task, he was ridden too far out of his ground, he was near to last at the top of the straight and did a colossal job to finish second, but you cannot give away a start like he did and expect to win.

Black And Bent was given a long 800 metres preliminary before the race, which didn’t help much either, he was always travelling mid-field for most of the race and did nothing in the run home.

Largo Lad was another that failed to flatter; he did very little and seems to have lost all previous form.

Greg Eurell, the trainer of Coldens Choice, has Pinker Pinker running in Sydney on Saturday in the Chipping Norton Stakes, he has engaged Blake Shinn for the ride.
