Trainer In Top Form

Trainer, Shea Eden, is riding on the crest of a wave at present, with a winning double at Cranbourne on Friday night, followed by the success of Zellindi in the open race at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The filly by, Bel Esprit, has improved out of sight since finishing mid field at Bendigo three weeks ago over the same trip, 1000 metres.

Eden showed faith in retaining Nathan Rose for the ride; he had her up running second all the way in what developed into a two horse race for the entire trip, he gave a polished display, waiting until the home turn before putting pressure on her.

While Eden has been away and has just returned, the stable has been ticking over nicely, he gave much of the credit to the staff back at Corinella, they have put in the hard yards.

The filly was bred by the O’Brien family at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, among the leading vendors at the recent Premier Sales in Melbourne.

Zellindi is by Bel Esprit, his fillies are going to be much sought after as future breed mares, those that are from good sound families.

A riding stint in Singapore hasn’t done Stephen Baster any harm, except maybe in the pocket after being banished home without any good reason.

He has returned a much more polished rider, he has benefited greatly from the Asian experience and the international competition.

That was never more evident than his polished display in riding a winning treble at Moonee Valley yesterday.

Stephen Baster has come a long way since the day he entered Mark Riley’s yard to become apprenticed.

Mornington trained mare, Dance With Her, is right on track for the Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick on Saturday, followed by the Sydney Cup two weeks later.

She performed quite well at her first outing in the reverse direction at Rosehill, running third in the Manion Cup.

According to David Brideoake, joint trainer of the mare with David Feek, they were happy with the run and believe she will be much better off at Randwick.

Glen Boss was missing from Melbourne and Sydney racing yesterday, doing what he does best riding winners.

Ascot, in Perth, was the venue where he rode a winning double, firstly the Schweppes Stakes on Gold Broker, and the Ausdrill Karrakatta Plate, the richest two year old race in Perth, on Melbourne trained filly, Ms Funovits, prepared by John Sadler at Flemington.

The W A punters had done their form well as they sent the filly, out by Reset, a $4.40 favourite, she won by one and a half lengths.

Hugh Bowman is credited with a great winning ride on Fiveandahalfstar in the weight for age B M W at Rosehill.

He led all the way over the 2400 metres, slowing the field down to almost a walk at one stage before setting the gelding alight rounding the home turn.

It was reminiscence of what was a wonderful era with those long weight for age races when the great Darby Munro was the master jockey, he could turn the pace off when required, then restart it, and as quick as you could snap your finger.

Bowman’s double in winning on Narzita and Fiveandahalfstar earned him $74,700 in percentages, today he is off to Wyong with two rides, each with a stakes of $22,000.

Darley to Partner with Arrowfield in Animal Kingdom’s Stud Career.

Arrowfield Stud, and Team Valor International, have announced that Darley has acquired a twenty nine per cent interest in the Grade 1 Dubai and Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom.

As a result Animal Kingdom will stand in the northern hemisphere season at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Lexington Kentucky.

The son of Leroidesanimaux will stand in the southern hemisphere season at John Messara’s Arrowfield Stud, in the Hunter Valley at Scone.

Darley’s CEO Oliver Tait said “Animal Kingdom is outstanding, not only is he immensely talented, he has shown a rare ability to excel on turf, synthetic and dirt, and win at a range of distances up to the mile and a quarter of the Kentucky Derby and the Dubai World Cup, his win at Meydan last Saturday was all class”

Arrowfield’s Chairman, John Messara said, “we are delighted to partner with Darley in the ownership of Animal Kingdom and management of his future international stud career”

”We have always had a great working relationship with Darley and have the utmost respect for H H Sheikh Mohammed and the Darley management team”

“With our unprecedented support Animal Kingdom will have every opportunity to develop from a champion racehorse into a champion sire,” he added.

Animal Kingdom’s majestic two length victory in last Saturday’s Dubai World Cup G1, over 2000 metres, was the first US trained success in the race since it has held on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Meydan.

The win took his career earnings to $US 8.3 million, he was crowned US champion three year old of 2011, as a four year old, at his first start for almost nine months, he was an impressive second to US champion Horse of the Year, Wise Dan, in the Grade 1 Breeders Cup Mile, on turf, at Santa Anita in course record time.

Current plans are for Animal Kingdom to compete in the Group1 Queen Anne Stakes, or the Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes, at Royal Ascot in June.

Bel Sprinter to take on Caviar

Bel Sprinter is poised and ready to lay the gauntlet down to Black Caviar in the T J Smith Stakes at Randwick, to be run at on Saturday week.

It wasn’t a hard decision to make for trainer, Jason Warren, after the gelding’s outstanding performance in winning the Galaxy at Rosehill last Saturday.

After missing the start by a length and a half, he then had to circle the entire field on the home turn to get a crack at the leaders.

The winning margin was three and a half lengths, plus he ran a blistering race record of 1.02.87.

Bel Sprinter is a renowned first up specialist having won five of his seven wins coming in from a spell.

If he can reproduce that run of last Saturday into the T J Smith against Black Caviar, we are in for a great contest at Randwick.

With so many horses being named it is natural that ultimately, in the future, names will be repeated.

After a span of 20 years an owner can apply to name a horse with a name previously used, in most cases that would be granted.

The name Studio popped up running second at Randwick earlier this week, a name not been heard of for quite a few years.

The original Studio was by Manfred, she was the dam of Chanak, one of the very best colts of his year, he was involved in the noisiest demonstration seen on a Melbourne racecourse.

Caulfield was the venue; it was the Guineas, Chanak ridden by Scobie Breasley, and trained by Jack Holt, was a hot favourite to win the semi Classic.

Chanak had the Guineas safely in his keeping when Breasley dropped his hands, Hororata, an outsider in the field, ridden by Billy Briscoe, got up to score by a half head.

Pandemonium broke out in all quarters, there were fights in all directions, Breasley, who was never the favourite son of chief steward Alan Bell gave the hoop three months for his indiscretion.

It proved a costly penalty for Breasley as Chanak won the Cox Plate two weeks later, ridden by Harold Badger.
