Magnus Fires Up For Eliza Park

Magnus is riding on the crest of a wave with six winners to his credit in as many days, proving the most consistent sire in Victoria at present.

He has had another great stud season as one would expect, he was a serious sprinter and has inherited the speed of his dam, Scandinavia, among the most remarkable mares in the stud book she has created   a dynasty, rare to say the least.

She was a very good filly, winning four races, with two at Group level and has since made a highly successful transition to stud.

The secret maybe as proved so often, lightly raced mares, with proven ability at two and three years of age, have a better strike rate than mares that have been over raced.

Scandinivia is ample proof of that through Magnus, Wilander, Scandiva, Arctic Flight and Helsinge, the dam of Black Caviar and All Too Hard.

Magnus comes off a wonderful female line, plus his sire line answers all the questions being a grandson of Danehill, through one of his better sons in Flying Spur.

With three crops of racing age Magnus is performing to the optimum, his progeny winning races consistently, giving the impression they will race on.

He is covering a book of 110 mares this season, with a good number of winning mares that will give him every chance.

There is an impressive draft of yearlings to represent him at the various sales in 2014.

Focus On Chatswood Stud

The focus was on Chatswood Stud at Flemington, on Saturday, with the win of Polanski in the U C I Stakes.

There was much significance attached to the success as it was the only Stakes winner sired in Australia by the world champion miler, Ratki.

He stood for just a couple of seasons at Chatswood Stud, Seymour; he died in 2010 a few days before he was due to return to the Irish National Stud.

Ratki defeated Elvstroem when they met in the Group 1 Lockridge Stakes at Newbury.

His sole representative in the Derby, Polanski, could further enhance the family of his dam, Citrium, if he could win the Classic.

She is a triple city winning mare by Citidancer, of her nine foals six have raced for five winners, with Polanski the best to date.

A two year old filly by Amadeus Wolf appeals as a likely type, plus a filly foal by Purrealist, the sire of the Caulfield Cup favourite, Hawkspur, and hopefully she is now in foal to Reward For Effort.

Should Polanski win the Derby the no sale sign is sure to go up at Chatswood Stud, you don’t generally sell fillies related to a classic winner.

There is a lot of nostalgia concerning the pedigree of her grand dam on her direct maternal line, Taimian was by the American bred Taipan, by the great Bold Ruler, out of Ritmar, by Star Kingdom.

Ritmar was sold to American interests after she won the Lightning Stakes at Flemington as a two year old, with the feather weight of 43 kgs.

Lucas Cranach - Well Supported

Lucas Cranach is receiving the support that he deserves at stud, with just on 100 mares booked to him in his first season at Bullarook Park Stud.

Whilst the breeding season has only been under way since the first week in September, he is already getting positive results at this early stage.

The German import was not short on ability either, as a track performer he was placed in the Melbourne Cup, won by Dunaden, and returned in the autumn to win the Peter Young Stakes at weight for age.

From what we saw of him here he was a high class racehorse, and it is just possible we may not have seen the best of him, due to a hoof problem.

Anthony Freedman, who trained Lucas Cranach here, had a high opinion of him, as did his brother Lee.

It is now in the hands of Malcolm Boyd, an experienced horseman at Bullarook Park, with 100 mares at his disposal to launch a highly promising young sire.

Mares with a touch of speed may well suit him; whilst he won over a distance here, with that reputation he was not exactly your dour staying horse, there was a touch of brilliance within.

Bullarook Park was formerly known as Glen Appin, it was established by Melbourne Cup winning jockey, the late Frank Reys and his partner, John Ingleton.

Arrowfield Lands Coup

John Messara is not the sort of person to let the grass grow under his feet, the ultra entrepreneur has completed a deal done and dusted, It’s A Dundeel will ultimately stand as a sire at Arrowfield.

Potentially the son of High Chaparral is the hottest stud property still racing in the southern hemisphere.

At one stage, all of his previous form was centred around his three year old classic races, which in all fairness was questionable.

However, that all changed after his defeat of Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

He has made the transition to weight for age, as he has matured his style of racing has changed, he is now more of an on pace runner.

It’s A Dundeel is surely destined for a highly promising stud career when retired to Arrowfield.

Stratheden Stud For Sale

Stratheden, a well known Stud at Tamworth in northern New South Wales, goes under the auctioneer’s hammer on the 31st of October.

The stud formerly stood Switch In Time, he proved a more that useful sire, at one stage his winners to runners was 74.1 per cent.

By Kris, a great source of speed through Sharpen Up, he left a lot of smart horses, including Sword, among his wins were the S A JC Goodwood Handicap, and the V A T C Group 2 Chirnside Stakes.

Switch In Time was foaled and reared in Ireland, yet his six wins were all recorded in North America.

His dam, Match Bend, by Never Bend, was a successful producer, she bore 12 foals of which 10 raced and all were winners.
