N Z Stayer looking for berth in Sydney Cup
New Zealand stayer, Pacorus, is looking for a berth in the Sydney Cup, could shorten on how he performs in the tomorrows Drymix Cement Bay of Plenty Cup 0ver 2100 metres at Tauranga.
Trainer, Chris Wood, has had the view the five year old gelding by Travistock, was an ideal prospect for the Group1 Sydney Cup run over 3200 metres at Royal Randwick on April 8.
However, the gelding did put in an ordinary run this time in from a summer break, leaving him equal 28 in order of entry for the $2 million staying test.
“He’s still in the race, but I’m getting behind the eight ball and he’d needs to win well tomorrow to be in the reckoning,” said Wood
“We are still a chance, he worked well yesterday, he may have turned the corner, let’s hope so,” he added.
The gelding has put together seven wins from 24 starts, Pacorus has made a quick ascension through the staying ranks last winter, winning five of his six starts from late June to early October.
He is adaptable on rain affected tracks, the gelding would relish the current conditions in Sydney, he is nicely treated with 50 kg for the Sydney Cup.
