Lumosty makes Stradbroke field

Lumosty has gained a start in tomorrow’s $2 Million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at the expense of Lord Of The Sky.

The pre-post favourite required a scratching to make the field and secure her place after trainer, Robbie Laing, was forced to withdraw his sprinter.

Lord Of The Sky had refused to load onto a plane, and then boarded a float to Brisbane only to throw a plate and suffer a cut leg early into the road trip.

Rules are Rules

All rules are similar, break them and run the gauntlet, you will ultimately face the consequences.

Racing has its rules too that can be far reaching for those that take risks, putting their livelihood in jeopardy, trying to beat the system, cheating does not get you very far, it is just a matter of time before you are caught.

One may feel sorry for Brendan McCarthy, he is a decent fellow from a well known racing family, he is devastated as a result of the three months ban, however, there is no alternative.

There are no concessions given, the stewards make no apologies for the penalties handed out, in some instances they could be more severe.

Race-day treatment is a serious breach of the rules that has been clearly spelt out; those that flout the system pay a heavy price.

The original penalty of three months has now been increased to six months disqualification, which reflects the seriousness of these charges if found guilty.

Loss of revenue, staff and horses, that may not return, or their owners, is a high price to pay for an act, for no gain that can ruin lives.

Lumosty Wins For Brave Owner

There were cheers all round for popular owner, Phil Sly, after his brilliant filly, Lumosty, scored an effortless win in the Listed Straight Six.

Breaking away from a charity luncheon for cancer, he entered the mounting yard with a smile, asking, “how is she?” he asked, a wink from Robert Smerdon satisfied him, it was just a matter of going around

Lumosty is right on track for her prime engagement, the $2 million Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm, in two weeks.

Phil is determined to be at Eagle Farm to see the filly, he will not hear of her being beaten, but first he is in need of another operation this week, his 47th, this time to remove ribs as a result of the dreaded disease.

Lumosty is still well down the list for a start in the Stradbroke; however, there is an alternative, the Tatts Tiara.

“I’ll just have to get myself right so I can be there in Brisbane, “he said referring to the fight against cancer, and his dedicated work with the charity, Pancare.

Sly is quite partial to fillies by Fastnet Rock, he also owns the Oaks winner, Mosheen, she was a more dour filly than Lumosty.

More Radiant In A Close Call

Vinery bred filly, More Radiant, who was not been that far away in winning in the, city got the better of last start Flemington winner, Face Forward, to win by a slender margin.

Both fillies singled out in a race between themselves, the lead changed quite a few times until More Radiant finally got the upper hand to score by a half neck.

The favourite, Northroza, a stable mate of the winner, finished a half length away in third place, without ever looking a serious threat in the race.

Plans are a little up in the air for the winner at this stage, whether she will continue to race on will be discussed by the owners and trainer, Mick Price.

Price described the win as fantastic for the filly, and her rider, ex New Zealander Michael Dee, a highly talented young jockey.

Price is quite protective of his fillies, he does not put them under too much stress, conscious they can still have a future after racing.

More Radiant is by More Than Ready, out of Ravishing Choice, she has produced four foals to race for three winners.

With two offspring on the ground, by Lonhro, the family could be further enhanced.

A Rare Trip To The City

Colac trainer, Mark Young, rarely comes to the city these days, by his own admission he hasn’t had a horse good enough to bring down.

He wasn’t sure if Dynamic Day was the right one either, she had been to Flemington previously when finishing second last over a 1000 metres down the straight.

She showed vast improvement when finishing third over 1200 metres earlier this month at Swan Hill.

There was no great confidence about the stable, hence she drifted from $19 to $41, while the odds on favourite, Kryptonian, had stormed home to win easily at Ballarat, was never in the hunt at Flemington.

She could easily win again on what she showed on Saturday, at last the two year olds are being stretched out in distance, which should suit her.

Mark Young is no stranger to Flemington, it has not been quite so frequent, not like the days when he trained Secret Flyer, he was a straight six specialist, generally coming from near last with a withering run.

Dynamic Day was ridden the perfect race by Dean Yendall, he had to do the hard yards before he was fully accepted as a jockey in the city.
