Rich Enuff gone missing

Rich Enuff, the equine find of last season, went missing at Flemington yesterday where he was well supported to win the Bobbie Lewis Quality.

At no stage of the race did he show that previous explosive speed that literally blew fields away, when he raced last season.

This was his second run in from a lengthy spell, he could be excused for the defeat at the hands of Bonded at Caulfield two weeks ago, there are no excuses this time, he ran well below his best.

He was far from relaxed in the mounting yard, it took too two handlers to lead him and when trainer, Ken Keys, came in to assist, he was thrown into the rose bushes.

Rich Enuff suffered an injury, after being beaten, when leading for most of the way in the Caulfield Guineas, won by Shooting To Win, he suffered an injury in the race and has been off the scene for nearly 12 months, a full season, he could have lost his confidence.

His trainer, Ken Keys, preferred not to comment after the race, he was naturally suffering from a bit of shell shock, and freeing himself from rose thorns.

Woodside Park has bought into the horse as a sire, they could be concerned with their investment.

Kinglike turns in sound performance

David Moodie was enthused about the first up win of Kinglike, after giving his opposition a pretty fair walloping, in the Danehill Stakes, at Flemington.

He had not been sighted since winning in late May at Moonee Valley, despite a quite drift in betting, he put his rivals away with a minimum of fuss.

At this stage the Coolmore, on Derby day, is being mentioned, ahead of the Caulfield Guineas, however, that could easily change.

A win in either of those two above mentioned races would just about ensure a stud career for the colt, he is by Exceed And Excel, a dominant sire line from Royal Glow, she was unraced, producing three winners.

Kinglike has had just the three starts for two wins, plus he is already a Stakes winner, which is a strong starting point to a stud career.

The favourite, Ready For Victory, was disappointing, after being well supported he was always there to win the race, but runs them in patches.

He ran completely off the course in the Golden Slipper Stakes, it is doubtful if he enjoys his role of being a racehorse, his attention seems to be directed elsewhere.

Headwater did little either, he promised a lot leading into the Golden Slipper, but failed again on Saturday at Flemington.

Petits Filous brilliant again

Petits Filous is an outstanding filly, she appeared out of the mid winter into the early spring, winning four times and remaining unbeaten.

She is yet to go further than 1100 metres, 1200 would still be a breeze, but whether she can extend beyond that is the unknown that her trainer, Ciaron Maher, has to juggle with as we continue into the spring.

Maher is not quite there yet, however, the sounds are getting louder, a young man with a bright future ahead of him, and his feet are still firmly planted on the ground.

The Thousand Guineas, no doubt, now comes into the equation, but there are not that many options for a pre run, that is the puzzle that Ciaron Maher has to sort out.

Fortunately, Petits Filous has shown she does not have to necessarily lead in her races, as was shown in her second win at Moonee Valley, and to some extent, also at Caulfield.

Her four wins in all, have not been fully decided by sheer speed alone, she has run time and been strong on the line, an indication she may get further.

She is a very exciting filly, as witnessed by her easy win in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes, named after a mare trained by the late Bart Cummings, following his memorial service at Flemington.

Treve on track for Longchamp

Treve, the pride of Longchamp, is poised to create history if she can win a third Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe, to be decided on the first Sunday in October.

The Arc, as it is best known, is the premier classic race in Europe, if not the world, open to three year olds and upwards, colts and fillies, geldings are excluded, as they should be, according to the purist, they don’t enhance the breed

First run in 1920 the winner, Comrade, ridden by the Australian jockey, Frank Bullock, two years later he won the race again, this time on Ksar, the second of that horses two wins.

Comrade was somewhat of an ungainly animal, of little conformation, when offered for sale as a yearling the auctioneer appealed to onlookers, if he could not receive a bid of 25 guineas he would pass the colt out as unsold.

Treve has already joined a select group Ksar, Corrida, Tantieme, Ribot and Alleged, as dual winners that have all won the race in successive years.

Ribot, possibly the best horse to have won the Arc, sired two winners of the classic, Molvedo, from his first crop of foals and Prince Royal three years later.

The Arc, run over 2400 metres is a genuine test of stamina, started at the windmill in a chute no more than 50 metres off the main course, then it’s a steady climb for 1200 metres before the first turn comes up.

It is a true test of stamina, a leader has often surrendered long before the top of the hill has been reached.

Treve is nearing the top of her form, her races are being well spaced, she won back in May, then the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud over 2400 metres in June.

On Sunday she faces up to the Prix Vermeille, which is likely to be her final run before the Arc, French trainers are inclined to give their horses longer preparations but space their races further apart as is in the case of Treve.

Her presence while working at Chantilly on the Piste des Aigles, attracted more than 50 members of the media who were on hand to see the dual Arc success lobbling along for a mile (1600 metres), before being asked to quicken up.

The work pleased her trainer, Criquette Head-Maarek, and rider, Thierry Jarnet, leading up to the first Sunday in October.

Chautauqua blitzes opposition

Chautauqua turned in a barn storming performance to blitz his rivals in winning the Group 2 McEwan Stakes at Moonee Valley.

He was near last with plenty of runners ahead of him, even on the home turn his chances of winning looked pretty forlorn.

They broke the minute for the 1000 metres and he is back as good as ever, the spring is shining brightly for him.

He is already a Group 1 success having won the T J Smith at Randwick, and was not disgraced running third to Dissident in the All Aged Stakes.

The Moir Stakes was to be on his agenda; however, the distance has now been altered from 1200 to 1000 metres, which is now not suitable for him since the change in distance of the race.

While there will now need to be a change in plans, it will not worry the Hawkes that much, it is easier to find races for good horses than poor ones.

There is no mention as yet about the $1 million Manikato Stakes, on Cox Plate eve, over 1200 metres.
