Vinery springs into action

The spring carnival proved pretty satisfying for Vinery Stud, with the Derby winner, Prized Icon, being by More Than Ready, and the Maribyrnong Plate success, Aspect, is by Pluck, and of course he is by More Than Ready.

More Than Ready is a remarkable and much travelled horse, next month he will have crossed the Pacific Ocean a record 32 times.

He is the only horse to be acclaimed champion two year old sire in both hemispheres, with an incredible 73 .4 % winner to runners.

A winning double followed the Derby at Mornington when Gold Artisan won well, he is in the right stable, the Hawkes team, having raced on just the five occasions more is sure to be heard of him

Next spot would be back to the city now that he has won a strong Maiden race, he put the field away with a minimum of fuss, he won with a fair bit in hand.

He looks more than capable of breaking through for a win in the city area over the coming weeks.

More Than Ready has total progeny earning s worldwide to $167.5 million, he has 19 Group 1 winners to his credit, 21 Group 2, and 305 Group 3 on his CV.

 Pluck wasting no time

Pluck, the son of More Than Ready, struck gold at Flemington when siring Aspect, he was an impressive winner of the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate.

The Maribyrnong Plate has always been among feature races of the spring for two year olds, it was a race that the late Tommy Smith usually targeted a youngster for, the race first run in 1871.

Aspect is the first Stakes winner sired to the credit of Pluck, whose racing career was somewhat restricted to seven appearances, he won three races, two were stakes races, while all three were at a mile (1600 metres).

As for Aspect, he is an exciting colt; he came from last and virtually nowhere to be seen until the race was almost over.

His stable mare, Azazel, started favourite but was no match for Aspect, he is a quality colt, he will now be spelled until autumn, which comes in quickly, he is sure to be aimed for the Blue Diamond.

While Aspect is enjoying his spell, Removal, by Pluck, stepped into the winner’s circle, he won at Swan Hill two days later.

Jameka wins for sire

Jameka’s brilliant win in the Caulfield Cup surely focuses attention on her sire, Myboycharlie, standing at Vinery Stud in the rich Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

His racing career was limited to just two seasons, however, that is not unusual, the commercial value soars once an entire captures a Group1 race.

Myboycharlie achieved that distinction when he won the premier two year old race in Europe, the Prix Morny, over 1200 metres, during the summer season at Deauville, the seaside resort, at the height of the summer season.

He was acclaimed the champion two year old colt in Europe of 2007, in what was an impressive win.

Jameka is the current flag bearer for her sire Myboycharlie, she won the Caulfield Cup as if she had just joined into the field, and there is not a possible reason why she cannot win the Melbourne Cup and add that to her already repertoire.

The much travelled French mare, Euro Charline, by Myboycharlie, won a Group 1 race earlier in America , she then finished fourth in Dubai , second in the Lockington Stakes at Newbury, went on to finish second at Deauville.

She finally wound up the season with spectacular performance in the Group 3 Prix Penelope at Saint Cloud.

Myboycharlie sired 58 winners last season from 141 starters, to date he has sired 14 Stakes winners.

Vinery’s Open Day

Breeders and horse lovers were in for a treat at Vinery’s Open Day, with the junior brigade almost stealing the show.

Both the first seasons’ sires, Press Statement and Headwater, are well prepared for what promises to be an excellent season.

Each horse has been given adequate time to let down, nothing is ever rushed at Vinery; they do it all so well.

Press Statement looked sensational; he has made into a magnificent stallion, a horse with a touch of class, an intelligent head, a deep shoulder, and well rounded hind quarters.

He is the real deal, and the all important factor, he is going to get the opportunity that he so richly deserves.

Press Statement and Headwater were well received by broodmares owners, while trainers, Chris Waller and Michael Hawkes, were on hand to add special comments, with M C, Adam White.

Champion jockey Hugh Bowman took the opportunity to get reacquainted with Press Statement, they combined to win the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes and the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes.

“This horse is a star, “Bowman said, “I had to ride him out of his comfort zone in the Caulfield Guineas, but his class came through, “he added.

Michael Hawkes was complimentary towards Headwater; he had shown ability from the outset. “He was never out of second gear first up at Moonee Valley, he was a real professional and has got a speed on speed in his pedigree,” he said.

Return of the Champ

More Than Ready touched down at Mascot Airport almost two weeks ago, in readiness for the 2016 breeding season.

First things first, he has gone into quarantine for a period, before heading off to Vinery in the Hunter Valley for another season.

The welcome home mat has been brushed up for the occasion, he‘s a great favourite and why shouldn’t he be? This will be his 16th trip to Australia as a dual hemisphere sire, he has not missed a season since retiring to Vinery in Kentucky in 2001, it will mark his 32nd consecutive season at stud..

He is ahead of such notable shuttlers as Royal Academy (28) Danehill (27) and Danehill Dancer (25).

Now in his 19thyear his fertility is as good as ever and the demand for his services are again strong.

His progeny’s versatility was evident again in 2015-16, with the emergence of the new Group1 performers, Perfect Reflection, Prized Icon and Eagle Way.

Perfect Reflection is the first three year old filly to win the Group1 Kingston Town Classic 1800 metres at weight for age, his two year old colt captured the Group1 Champagne 1600 metres at Randwick, and his three year old stayer, Eagle Way, won the Group1 Queensland Derby 2400 metres, clinching a future career in Hong Kong.

No other sire was represented by more than 3 Group 1 winners in Australia last season.

And no other stallion has a global reputation to match More Than Ready in the juvenile division, the only stallion to be crowned Champion two year old sire in both the USA and Australia; he has had 61 stakes winners in that age group.

Golden Slipper winner, Sebring, launched More Than Ready as a sire of sires and Horse of the Year Dissident, foaled in his first crop and More Than Ready’s Group 1 Queens winner, Gimmethegreenlight (Aust), was recently crowned freshman sire with 14 winners of R1.7 million.
