Surgery for winning jockey

Queensland Oaks winning jockey, Leith Innes, will be laid up for the remainder of the racing season, and possibly a month or two into the new season, while convalescing after a knee operation today.

Innes has ridden four Group 1 winners this season and was seen at his best on the Zabeel filly Provocative, she completely outstayed her rivals.

He goes into an enforced break on the back of among the best wins in his career, having guided the Tony Pike trained Provocative to success in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks over 2400 metres at Eagle Farm.

“Provocative is quite special, we’ve had a big opinion of her right from day one, she was ruled out of the race here, she would have been my Derby ride at Ellerslie, “ said Innes.

Except for the big wet in Queensland, when the original Oaks meeting had to be abandoned, the Oaks and Derby were on her agenda.
