Classic targets still on James radar

Roger James isn’t done with his hunt for Classic success for the season.

The Cambridge trainer has The Hassler, and Romantic Maid, in contention for Brisbane next month, The Hazzler is on track for the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm on June 11, and Romantic Maid, already a dual winner, will have one further start leading into the Queensland Oaks.

The High Chaparral filly finished third on her Australian debut in a 1900 metres rating 78, at Rosehill last Saturday.

“I was satisfied but thought she might have done a little better,” said James.

“Michael Rodd felt she was very much in need of blinkers, saying they would have assisted her in running on more than one occasion.”

“We haven’t had that feedback before, but it might be as a result of what happened when she clipped the heels of another runner at Ellerslie,” said James.

James will add blinkers to Romantic Maid’s gear when she has her next start in a three year old filly’s race, at Randwick on Wednesday.

The Hassler pleased James with a quite trial at Cambridge last Tuesday, the gelding is set for an exhibition gallop at Te Rapa tomorrow, a week of a planned start in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes over 2200 metres, at Doomben on May 28.
