Chatswood Stud - A success Story

Chatswood Stud, the oldest commercial thoroughbred stud in Victoria, first established at Avenel in 1972 by the late Alan Willis.

It would be remiss if Alan, the founder of Chatswood, wasn’t included in the honour role, he was a kind gentle man, his word was his bond.

He struck a gold mine literally when he purchased Red God, by Star Kingdom, from the late Colin Hayes, of Lindsay Park.

Hayes didn’t hide his disappointment when Red God failed to get precocious progeny as Todman did, hence Alan was able to purchase the stallion.

Red God turned the corner, a change of scenery obviously worked wonders, as he commenced to sire a number of winners, Alan needed another stallion to take the work load off Red God, his choice was Plush, another wise decision, Alan had the midas touch for selecting stallions.

Chatswood have since located to Seymour with a much larger acrerage than at Avenel, the stud has used several sires, some with limited success until Reward For Effort appeared on the scene.

He was the horse to lift the image of Chatswood, with an excellent pedigree, lightly raced, just the 10 starts, Group1, what more do you need? That’s the recipe for success.

Reward For Effort is a Blue Diamond Stakes success, his progeny are early comers and race on, they are versatile.

Keri Gore is the new face at Chatswood, recruited from New Zealand to the position of stud manager.

Gore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Chatswood having worked with Sir Patrick Hogan and Cambridge Stud, where he handled the great Zabeel, an outstanding sire of staying horses, and the latest revelation to Cambridge Stud, Travistock.

He didn’t read it all out of books, pedigrees are one thing, practical knowledge is another that can only be learnt with time and experience.

Over the past two decades, after spending 17 years at Cambridge working in all departments in the thoroughbred breeding industry, and also a stint at Waikato Stud as Yearling Manager.

Working on these two world class operations has increased his knowledge into the best practices in the thoroughbred breeding industry.

Studmaster, Greg Willis, said,” we feel very fortunate to secure a horseman like Keri Gore, since our first meeting we’ve been overwhelmed by his knowledge and work ethic, myself and the rest of the staff are excited to learn from Keri, and I am confident in the direction Chatswood Stud is heading.”

Gore, a New Zealander, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Chatswood, a stud that is firmly entrenched at Seymour, among the leading studs in Victoria, bordered by lush river flats on the Goulburn River.

The appointment of Keri Gore is a positive move by Greg Willis, as Gore has always wanted to work on an Australian stud.
