Stradbroke winner to stand at Grandview Stud

Under The Louvre, who destroyed the field in winning the 2016 Stradbroke Handicap, is now ready to take up stud duties at Grandview Stud, Ipswich, in Queensland.

He should be a great addition to the state as he possessed a brilliant turn of foot that saw him win Queensland’s richest sprint race, the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.

His sire, Excellent Art, by Pivotal by Nureyev, he basically competed in rather elite company, he was certainly up to the scale winning the Group 1 St James’s Stakes at Royal Ascot over the mile, and the Mill Reef Stakes Group 2 Newbury.

Excellent Art only saw a few short seasons at stud in Australia, he has since returned to England.

His son Under The Louvre is the ideal stallion, he had incredible acceleration, he had gate speed, he positioned himself well, among his many features he was game and honest, seldom turning in a poor run.

His trainer, Robert Smerdon, spoke in glowing terms about him “he mixed it with the best in the Stradbroke, he faced up to nine Group 1 winners, including Black Hard Bart,” said Smerdon.

“He could have been a multiple Group 1 winner, I thought he was a bit stiff in the Oakleigh Plate, he flew home in 33 seconds flat, he only missed out by a lip in the Rupert Clarke and was beaten a neck in the Goodwood by Black Hard Bart.”

“I inherited the horse as a three year old, he was originally picked out as a yearling by Tony Vasil who has a great eye,” said Michael Grieve, stud master at Grandview Stud.

Under The Louvre Mobile

Under The Louvre winning the Stradbroke Hcp.

Under The Louvre won on debut as a two year old by four lengths, and his Group One as a five year old, that illustrates his longevity.

He is the best preformed son of Excellent Art at stud, his grandsire Pivotal produced over 130 winners and that just from being based in one hemisphere.

Another interesting aspect is that Pivotal matched up with Danehill, he is running at a massive rate of 18 per cent, being free of Danehill blood, he offers breeders an outcross.

Under The Louvre retires to stud having won nine races and 14 placings, with prizemoney of $1.8 million.

Under The Louvre stands along side of the proven sire, Jet Spur by Flying Spur, a Slipper graduate, and the promising sire, Whittington, by Tale of the Cat, at Grandview Stud,Ipswich.
